Agate Falls
This one's a little ways away from the Keweenaw, but worth the trip, especially if lined up with Bond and O-Kun-De-Kun Falls and the Friday night crab buffet in Watersmeet. Situated on the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River, downstream from Bond Falls, Agate Falls is an impressive sight, especially when viewed from the bottom of the gorge it feeds into. Park your car at the Agate Falls roadside park (vault toilets here if needed). There's a decked pathway that leads underne

Bond Falls
A little ways outside of the Keweenaw is Bond Falls, a relatively small state park that consists of a parking lot, vault toilets and a decked pathway that circles Bond Falls. I know it's a little out of the way from this site's target region but for those of you heading north from Wisconsin, this one's definitely worth the stop. Not only is is easily accessible, but there's a lot more to see than just what the decks show you. On both the east and west sides of the Ontonagon R

Silver Mountain
Named after the mineral the mine at the base hoped to find, Silver Mountain offers beautiful views of the Sturgeon River gorge and Prickett Lake to those who make the trip. The mine has since been sealed, though this location still offers a relatively easy hike. There is an established trail with staircases that lead to the top. The top of the mountain has many sparse areas due to bedrock outcroppings at the surface. This allows for many viewing areas of the surrounding terra

Falls River
Even after five years of driving by it, I didn't notice Falls River until I was riding shotgun on a trip downstate. Aptly named, Falls River is known for its several smaller-scale waterfalls that run along its length before it flows into L'Anse Bay. The first main falls on this stretch of river are called the upper, middle (pictured above) and lower falls (below). Note that there are other falls a bit further upstream that aren't covered in this post (Power Dam Falls). The u
Lake Medora
Photos coming soon! What's cooler than camping? If you were thinking "camping on an island", you are correct. Southwest of Copper Harbor sits Lake Medora, the fourth largest lake in the Keweenaw. Besides being a beautiful and easily accessible lake for boating, fishing and kayaking, Lake Medora also contains four islands, three of which are great for camping. The southernmost island is the smallest, and due to it's rockiness and rounded topography, you can maybe only fit one

Canyon Falls
Just off the highway between Houghton and Marquette is Canyon Falls Roadside Park. This area has everything you'd expect from a typical roadside park (bathrooms, water, picnic tables) with one added bonus: a well maintained walking path along one of the UP's most striking canyon-waterfall systems. The path itself is just under a half mile in length from the parking lot to the viewing area, with wooden walkways and areas to access the Sturgeon River's northern banks. The viewi

Horseshoe Harbor
A short drive and hike east of Copper Harbor is Horseshoe Harbor, a rock beach-turned-bay by prominent outcrops of conglomerate rock. The beach area is beautiful in its own right, but walking along the conglomerate mounds offers a fantastic view of Lake Superior, and if you're lucky, the Northern Lights. The south side (near the beach) of this outcrop offers great wind protection and easy access to firewood makes this location a fantastic camping spot, particularly if you're

14 Mile Point Lighthouse
Built in the late 1800's, the 14 Mile Point Lighthouse offered guidance to passing ships from the shores of 14 Mile Point until the 1950's when it was decommissioned and sold privately. The lighthouse caught fire in 1984 and what remains of it are the lighthouse's brick walls and metal cupola. Other surviving buildings are the brick signal house and a white wooden structure. Though much of the grounds have been overgrown with vegetation over the years, there's still a lot of

Mount Baldy
Probably the coolest (and longest) hike to the top of a viewpoint in the area. Mount Baldy is situated just south of Lake Bailey and offers views of Eagle Harbor, Lake Bailey, Mount Houghton, Mount Bohemia and the surrounding areas. I've heard that it's possible to see Isle Royale on a particularly clear day too. I'm not sure if you're allowed to camp here, though if you do decide to I'd recommend making camp a bit away from the cliffs as they're pretty windswept and you tent

Highrock Bay
Located at the very tip of the Keweenaw peninsula, Highrock Bay is pretty far removed from civilization but easily accessible to those with adequate 4-wheel drive vehicles or ATVs. This is an incredibly beautiful place to camp and does not require much of a hike if your car can make it. Highrock bay consists of a stone beach with bedrock jutting out on the north side. You can camp here, or if already occupied by other campers, drive on the beach to the north a bit to reach an
